Hlíf Gylfadóttir

Hlíf GylfadóttirMy name is Hlíf Gylfadóttir and I teach social sciences  here at FAS.  This is my second year as a teacher here and in that time I have taught both social sciences and some history.

I was born in Reykjavík, but brought up in Vestmannaeyjar, islands just of the south coast of Iceland. My parents still live there and one of my two older sisters.  After finishing primary school I went to Reykjavík for for secondary school  and did not return home until I had finished my education at the University of Iceland in Anthropology and  teaching.

After that I spent five years in Vestmannaeyjar working in a folk museum, and enjoyed that very much. The place is rich with history, folklore and in 1973 every inhabitant of the island had to be evacuated because of a volcanic eruption that started on the outskirts of the town.

I like history very much and everything human makes me curious. I have a special interest in fishermen and their local traditions, superstitions and such.

In my spare time I enjoy books, movies, hunting down old fishermen with stories to tell and just enjoying being here.
