Our day started early at 8am. It was our time –the Polish Day. We had been working very hard to have everything ready and get people interested and involved. The auditorium was full of Icelandic students who didn‘t know much about Poland. We started with introducing ourselves to the audience and passing red t-shirts with Polish coat of arms to our Icelandic friends. After that we started introducing them to our school, town, region and country with many interesting presentations. Our teachers prepared a short test to check if Icelandic students know anything about our country. There were a few small rewards for the winners. After that we showed them a documentary film promoting Poland. When the next presentation about Cracow was finished Justyna and Renata danced „krakowiak“, which was enthusiastically welcomed by the Icelandic students. We even managed to find some volunteers who wanted to try dancing. They did quite well! After that we prepared 5 classrooms with different themes : Polish paper cutouts, Polish customs and traditions, a culinary trip to Poland, a workshop about national stereotypes and a Polish lesson. When 5 groups visited all of the rooms we went back downstairs to find grilled sausages served with potato salad. Polish „zwyczajna“ proved to be very tasty. It felt good to find some Polish tastes in Iceland.
Then it was the SHOWTIME! Conrad in his wrestling prestentation, Sylwia leading a group of Polish and Icelandic students in „polonez“ and Rafal with his fire-dancing.
It all ended up in the auditorium again. We watched „Mala wielka milosc“, a Polish romantic comedy.
For the evening Rafal promised a bigger fire-dancing performance. The crowd gathered outside the school at 8pm. And off he went...
It was our BIG DAY in Iceland. All in all it was worth all the work we´ve put into it.
